357Days ShezPhoto #9 The Christmas Train

The Christmas Train

This is the historical 4449 steam powered-locomotive. It toured the United States as the Freedom Train for the Bi-Centennial. During that time is was painted red, white and blue. It is back home in Portland OR and wears it standard issue colors of orange.

Christmas 2009 we rode it along the Willamette River, under the bridges, and saw the sights of the city at night. Santa made a visit delivering candy canes to the children. The train currently is in storage along with two other historical trains and they are kept up through the efforts of a volunteer group of train lovers.

The magnificent steam engine engulfed us in steam as she chugged out with her next group of passengers. Her majestic size with wheels larger than a man, and the roar of power  from the engine was spectacular. The ride? AWESOME!
