352Days ShezPhoto #14 Contorta Filbert

Contortae Filbert Bark Shines in the Sun

The Contortae Filbert’s branches twist, curl and turn in unexpected ways. Without its leaves it is wonderfully intricate bit of  architecture, it loves to show off in the winter, especially when covered in snow. Our ornamental Contortae has never produced any nuts, though the wild hazelnut trees that sprout up in our flower beds do produce nuts. Unfortunately the squirrels and Stellar jays love them and they selfishly steal them all. Oregon produces about 90% of the filberts in the USA, but in Oregon they are always called Hazelnuts. Perhaps Hazelnuts taste much better than filberts.
