298Days #68 Squirrel Home

The Squirrel Nest

The beautiful engineering of these huge squirrel nests is amazing. This one is nearly 3 feet in diameter and we have watched the little squirrel coming and going with her spring remodel. There are new large leaves on the outside and we have seen her taking new material into the depths of the nest. Each nest is soft and comfy lined in moss and if some is available with shredded bark from cedar trees. The nests are so well insulated that the babies are born in early March stay warm and safe inside the nest. Each nest has a hole near the top on one side and an escape hole on the bottom. They are wonderfully engineered and are lived in for years. This one is about 35 feet above the ground and will soon be protected from the heat of the summer by the leaves of this large tree.

Have a great day.

Cheers, Shez

Love the texture of the branches (or twigs)!!! 🙂 **

Thank you, Xandre for noticing the textures. It was hard to get a good photo because the photos all were silhouettes. It took several days before the lighting was favorable.

The nests are so amazing. Each can be so different depending on the material at hand. We had one in our garden shed that helped herself to a box of Christmas decorations and wove Christmas ribbon throughout. Her’s was not so high up, since she chose to build it in a weather tight building.

This nest is so high up I think the twigs are large enough to be branches. The nest is about 11 meters above my head and at least a meter in diameter. The squirrel is so small compared to her nest.
