180Days #186 4th of July 2012
We joined our son, daughter-in-law and two blue-eyed grandchildren for a July 4th gathering at their house. Several families joined them and then the party spilled out into their cul-de-sac with everyone bringing their own chairs. People also brought food for a pot-luck style dinner. There was lots of time to sit, visit and watch the many kids play. There were street ball games for the older kids, chalk drawing, face painting, and zipping up, and down the street on their various wheeled vehicles. They took over the street for a real street party. In the end all the other neighbors joined in with every family bringing their fireworks.
When it was finally dusk and anxious kids could wait no longer, the sparklers were brought out. That took up the time until it was dark, which in Oregon doesn’t happen until nearly 10pm in the summer. The men brought out their legal fireworks, which meant they are fountains, nothing taller than 10 feet and nothing that launches. It was enough to keep the kids happy and yelling for one more as the dads took turns lighting each fountain.
I am sharing one photo of tonight’s fireworks.
For those of you who have seen the amazing aerial fireworks from around the world every New Years, these are small potatoes. But for families with kids who do not want to brave the crowds and the traffic on a holiday where the little ones get too tired before it’s dark enough to light the fireworks, a neighborhood gathering in a big turn-around is great fun. A time to bring the neighbors together over food, some wine and when the fountains are over and the kids are tired there are no crowds or traffic to deal with to get them home.
A great time was had by all. And the weather was a perfect 77 to today to make everything even more fun. A holiday off in the middle of the week is strange, but it was a wonderful and relaxing day for Sweet Hubs and me. And there are only two more work days this week.
PS another late post. My network was down. By the time that was reset, it is 12:02am.
I am very tired, was up at 4:30AM to get photos of the full moon. I need sleep.
