31Days #335 First Snow, oops…Blizzard

Wind and first snow of winter blow into North Dakota

It began to snow a bit on Thursday evening and there was a bitingly cold wind.

It was the morning we were supposed to leave Watford City ND for the forty mile drive north-east to Williston ND. Surprise the blizzard was pressing down on us a day early. It was 26 F degrees with a 25 miles an hour wind. We left two hours and a half hours early  just in case the roads would be bad.

The above photo was taken from the car window and thought it looks like we are whizzing past, we are not. With snow and wind gusting to 40 miles an hour, everything looked like it was on the move. The wind is whipping the trees and they are all listing west.

For those who have NOT been along on this adventure by train from the mild western part of Oregon, USA to the barren and cold of North Dakota, USA. We were 80 miles south of Canada. We had arrived to mild temperatures late on Monday evening. The weather was cool, but not cold. We awoke to mild temps in the 50 on Tuesday. There had been a blizzard warning for Canada and northern United States. It was to arrive with a cold front and heavy winds on Saturday.

We walked to the diner for dinner Thursday evening and were surprised at the cold bite to the wind. As we came out of the diner we were even more surprised to see that it was snowing and sticking. But it was just a light dusting, nothing to worry about when we would be driving back to the train station the following morning.

It was a fitting end to our adventure.

Cheers to surprises,

Never made the trip by train but oh so many miles logged in over that area I tried to avoid the northern route in winter and hauled loads along the I-10 lol Glad you had a blast!
