19Days #347 Resident Hummingbird

A tiny Annas Hummingbird sits on a bare branch in the snow.

This year round resident of our yard is an Anna’s hummingbird who survives no matter the weather.

This tiny guy scolds us if his feeder runs out of food. This photo was taken a couple of years ago and it was extremely cold. The feeders froze. We solved that by hanging the feeder in a protective alcove in the covered part of the deck and wrapping an electric water pipe heater around the glass sides of the feeder. The little guy discovered he could sit on the warm wire to rest. At night he roosted on the sill above the window, close both to the feeder heater and the warmth of the shelter.

The brilliant red head and bright green torso show no signs of color unless there is no sunlight. On this snowy day the sky was very dark and grey, not a glimmer of sun made it through.

Cheers to tiny creatures,

I put a plastic box in a sheltered part of our patio, hooked up Christmas lights that give off some warmth, and put in a feeder. They haven’t tried it yet that I can tell, but hopefully they will try it and be warmer. Last night was in the 30s here.

Cool. In this case Warm!! We also had thought about Christmas lights but were not sure if the littlest creatures would be fond of them. We also left it in the open due to their obsessive territorial ways and desire to have clear view of food from a distance. Let me know how it works out. That would be easier to put up more of them. 😀

As far as I know, they aren’t going for it yet. I guess I need to hang out a welcome sign. I put some red fake flowers by it to attract their attention. We’ll see.
