1Day #365 Ducks
Outside the kitchen window this morning, I saw a pair of mallard ducks and a pair of green wing teal. The teal hang around for a month or two before heading off to their breeding grounds. The pair of mallard are here year round. In the spring they fight to run off the other ducks. This past year a total of six females nested and the six mates hung around bored and waiting. This year due to weather, only one duck successfully had her brood hatch to go for their first swim.
As is the way with nature, even with a hatch of 12 ducklings, none of them survived this spring. Predators, torrential rains, cold nights and they simply disappear. Little by little one or two went missing every day or two over the course of a week.
As this year ends, seeing the ducks this morning was a reminder that with tomorrow, a new cycle begins.
Cheers to New Years,
